The 2009 legislative election will see 34 political parties vying for seats in the House of Representatives, after the General Elections Commission (KPU) passed 18 new parties after less than a month of factual verification.
Old faces will feature in next year’s election, including former Indonesian Military commander Gen. (ret) Wiranto with his Hanura Party, Roy Janis with his Democratic Reform Party, Oesman Sapta with his Regional Unity Party and Yapto Soerjosumarsono with his Patriot Party.

TAIPEI/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Historic regular flights between Taiwan and China began on Friday, in a show of conciliation between the long-time rivals that could bring large numbers of mainland Chinese visitors to the island.
The first of the flights, a China Southern Airlines plane, landed at Taipei’s Taoyuan airport after leaving Guangzhou in southern China early in the morning.

Moderate Muslim scholars said there were no reasons to reject homosexuals under Islam, and that the condemnation of homosexuals and homosexuality by mainstream ulema and many other Muslims was based on narrow-minded interpretations of Islamic teachings.

QUINCY, Illinois (Reuters) - Volunteers and relief workers fortified levees on the rising Mississippi River on Thursday to prevent more flooding that has caused billion-dollar losses and ignited global food inflation fears.
Nearly two dozen levees on the key U.S. commercial waterway have overflowed as floodwaters swamped small towns and thousands of acres of fertile farmland. Grain and meat prices have soared on concerns about short supplies.
